Netflix’s strategy in India is undergoing a calculated recalibration. For years, the streaming giant focused its efforts on high-concept prestige dramas and star-studded direct-to-digital feature films to establish a foothold. However, the economics of Indian streaming are shifting. The high cost of customer acquisition combined with the volatility of scripted production timelines has led Netflix India to look toward a more efficient lever: the unscripted global format.

Monika Shergill, Netflix India’s VP of Content, is now signaling that the platform is ready to import its most successful intellectual property to the subcontinent. The shift follows the recent performance of captive reality shows, which have proven that Indian audiences have a deep, sustained appetite for high-stakes interpersonal drama. While the platform has experimented with localized unscripted content before, the current move suggests a transition from one-off experiments to a systematic deployment of the Netflix global playbook.

From a business perspective, the move into localized versions of franchises like *Love is Blind* or *Too Hot to Handle* is a play for operational efficiency and retention. Scripted hits are expensive to produce and even harder to replicate. In contrast, unscripted formats provide a structured, repeatable engine for content generation. The production costs are typically lower, the turnaround time from shooting to release is faster, and the modular nature of reality TV allows for intense social media integration—essential for driving organic growth in a mobile-first market like India.

This regional pivot also addresses the challenge of building a distinct brand identity in a crowded market. By leveraging formats that are already household names globally, Netflix reduces the marketing friction associated with introducing a new concept. The audience already understands the rules of the game; the draw becomes the cultural translation. For Shergill, the goal is likely to create a reliable bridge between the streamer's premium global image and the mass-market appeal required to scale beyond the major metropolitan hubs.

However, the execution carries risks. The Indian unscripted market is already dominated by legacy broadcasters who have perfected the art of the 'mega-reality' show. To compete, Netflix cannot simply replicate television formulas; it must maintain the 'Netflix polish' while navigating the complex regulatory and cultural sensitivities that often surround reality formats in the region. If successful, this format-heavy strategy will provide the platform with a high-margin content pillar that supports its more expensive bets in the scripted space. The era of localized experimentation is evolving into a period of industrial-scale format adaptation.
