We have spent the last twenty years narrowing the physical footprint of productivity, moving toward a world where a flick of the wrist or a subtle click carries the weight of a thousand lines of code. Ryan’s latest project, fcbnerd, is not a flashy consumer product or a venture-backed SaaS platform. It is a bridge between a specific piece of legacy hardware—the Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller—and the intricacies of the macOS environment. Originally designed for guitarists to switch effects in the middle of a solo, the FCB1010 is a heavy, industrial-grade board that looks like it belongs in a touring rack from 1998. It is built to be stepped on, hard. By mapping this hardware to system-level macros, Ryan has essentially transformed a piece of musical equipment into a physical extension of the developer’s intent.
The logic here is grounded in ergonomics and the economy of motion. Every time a developer leaves the home row to fumble for a complex keyboard shortcut, a small amount of cognitive momentum is lost. Ryan’s approach offloads these repetitive tasks to the feet. While your hands remain focused on the logic of the code or the precision of the design, your feet manage the auxiliary infrastructure: opening terminal windows, toggling system settings, or executing build scripts. It is a reimagining of the body as a full-participation tool for digital creation.
